Design reviews

We are happy to review work for projects undertaken elsewhere. It is often invaluable to get a fresh perspective on solutions to a design problem. We are also delighted when clients choose to use an independent reviewer for our work. We strongly feel our design outcomes stand up well in review and are improved by critique and evaluation. Objective Design's Design Review process ensures design standards, alignment and diligence requirements have been met or surpassed through the course of the product design process.

Standards

Ensuring designs meet appropriate standards for consistency, accessibility, usability, branding issues, sustainability (particularly shipping, packaging and recycling), emissions and susceptibility, FCC, CE, RoHS, Green Partners, etc.

Diligence

Realising maximum value from early-stage design methodologies. Increasing accountability and clarity of action plans by keeping and distributing minutes of each design review. Involving people outside the design team at appropriate points.

Alignment

Ensuring designs meet specification and business goals. Ensuring industrial design is integrated well into the brand or market sector targeted. Minimising late-stage changes to product requirements and concepts.

Packaging Design

Package design and development are crucial in most product development processes. Development of a package or packaging component can be a separate process, but should be closely linked with the product if it is to serve well. At Objective Design, package design starts with considering the following areas:

  • Structural.
  • Marketing.
  • Shelf life
  • Quality assurance.
  • Logistics.
  • Legal and regulatory.
  • Graphic design.
  • User behaviour.
  • Environmental.

Design criteria, time limits, methodologies, technologies, materials and cost constraints must be established and agreed upon - although these may need to be kept flexible. Other considerations in package design:

Sustainability

Environmental responsibility, and environmental and recycling regulations - both existing and planned. A life cycle assessment, considering material and energy inputs and outputs; the packaged product, the manufacturing process, disposal, etc. Full understanding of regulatory requirements for all planned markets to internationalise and future-proof designs.
