Design Guidelines

If you don't have 3D CAD files available we can produce a CAD model for you from physical parts or drawings. Just let us know what you have and we will quote on producing the appropriate file.

In general wall thicknesses should be 1.0mm or more. Thinner walls sections (down to 0.2mm) can be achieved with suitable design and appropriate material choice however designers should notify at the time of quoting if walls of less than 1.0mm thickness are present in a part.

We prefer to receive .STL files for quoting and part production. The procedure for producing STL files for common software is outlined below for solidworks and Pro/Engineer. If you have other software please click the link below.

If you can’t generate .STL files we can convert between common 3D file formats. A small charge may be applicable for 3D conversion.

Saving as .STL with other software

To avoid common faults in parts please read through the following tips and tricks.

Design Guidelines - Tips and Tricks

Saving to .STL with SolidWorks

  • File > Save As

  • Set Save As Type to STL (*.stl)

  • Options > select “Fine” > OK

  • Save

STL settings: How to change STL settings

  • File > Save As

  • Set Save As Type to STL (*.stl)

  • Options

  • For a smoother STL file, change the Resolution to Custom

  • Change the deviation to 0.0005in (0.004 mm)

  • Change the angle to 5

(Smaller deviations and angles will produce a smoother file, but the file size will get larger)

Saving to .STL with Pro/ENGINEER

  • File > Export > Model

  • STL

  • Set chord height to 0. The field will be replaced by minimum acceptable value.

  • Set Angle Control to 1

  • OK
